An Electronic Address - Figurine
Can I blame Owl City on Jimmy Tamborello? This Figurine album showed up in 1999 on the very tiny Blackbean And Placenta Tape Club label; it’s one the earliest examples of indietronica I can think of. Now, in our post-Postal Service world, that genre tag strikes fear in my heart, but at the time the idea of a twee indie group taking cues from The Human League felt like a fresh idea. Instead of a girl being plucked from her lowly waitress job and transformed into a star, we have a sad boy obsessively checking his computer, waiting on an email from a girl. Not exactly the glamourous makings of a pop megahit.
